The Science of Better Riding

Ever feel like you’re fighting your snowboard instead of flowing with it?

Maybe your turns feel smooth on a groomer, but everything changes when the snow gets choppy. Or perhaps you’re working harder than you should to control your speed, struggling to find a rhythm that feels natural. What if a little more understanding could change all of that?

Flow State is a two-day snowboard workshop at Boreal Mountain that explores the science behind great riding. Through hands-on experimentation, personalized coaching, and purposeful practice, you’ll discover how your board, your movements, and the mountain work together to shape every turn.

Discover the Physics of Flow

Over two full days we’ll explore how terrain, snow conditions, equipment design, and momentum influence your riding. More importantly, you’ll learn how to use that understanding to make thoughtful adjustments, manage speed through turn shape, and find greater flow across a variety of conditions.

Rather than simply learning what works, you’ll develop a deeper understanding of why it works. You’ll experiment with different approaches, learn to recognize feedback from the snow, and discover how to adapt your technique to the terrain and conditions in front of you. The goal isn’t to memorize the science. It’s to feel the difference.

You don’t need to be a physics enthusiast or have attended Foundations 1.0. Just bring your curiosity and a willingness to experiment.

Part of the Foundations Series

Flow State is the second of three workshops designed to help you become your own teacher. Each workshop stands on its own, while completing the series provides a more comprehensive approach to understanding your performance and directing your progression.

This workshop has a minimum participation of 4 persons to operate, if minimum participation is not met within 14 days of the start date you will receive a full refund. LIFT TICKETS INCLUDED IN REGISTRATION PRICE

Thursday | Discover the Physics of Flow

Learn how the mountain, your snowboard, and your movements work together.

We’ll start by exploring the forces that shape every turn, from gravity and momentum to the interaction between your board and the snow. Through simple demonstrations and on-snow experimentation, you’ll discover how terrain shape and snow conditions influence your riding.

Next, we’ll explore how the same turn behaves in different environments. You’ll experiment with turn shape, pressure management, and steering while learning to recognize the feedback your board and the snow provide.

By the end of the day, you’ll have a deeper understanding of why certain techniques work in some situations but may need to change in others.

Friday | Find Your Flow

Put the science into practice and learn to work with the mountain.

Today, we’ll turn that understanding into more intentional riding. You’ll explore how to choose an approach based on the terrain, snow conditions, and the outcome you want to achieve.

With guidance from your coach, you’ll work backward from a desired result to identify the movements and turn shapes that can help you get there. Through experimentation and sensory feedback, you’ll learn to make thoughtful adjustments and discover how small changes can influence your speed, balance, and flow.

You’ll finish the workshop with a deeper understanding of how to adapt your technique, manage forces, and make informed decisions as conditions change.
