Explore Different Styles. Discover Your Own.

There’s more than one way to leave a beautiful line in the snow.

From the playful, expressive movements of duck stance carving to the flowing, dynamic shapes of Japanese-inspired posi-posi carving, different riding styles offer unique approaches to achieving the same fundamental goal: creating clean, intentional turns. But while the movements may look different, the underlying variables remain the same.

Welcome to Freedom in Style, the second installment of our two-part Carving workshop series.

Over two days at Palisades Tahoe, we’ll explore how stance configuration, equipment design, movement choices, and personal expression influence the way we carve.

On Day 1, we’ll dive into duck stance carving, exploring how a more symmetrical stance creates opportunities for dynamic carves in both directions, as well as creates a platform for freestyle expression.

On Day 2, we’ll shift our attention to soft-boot posi-posi carving, investigating how positive binding angles and alternative movement strategies influence balance, edge engagement, and the shape of our turns, allowing us to carve deeper and steeper.

Through guided experimentation, personalized coaching, collaborative learning, and on-snow video analysis, you’ll have the opportunity to challenge familiar movement patterns, explore new possibilities, and discover which elements of each approach complement your own riding.

This isn’t about copying someone else’s technique or deciding which carving style is better. It’s about understanding how different riders use the same fundamental principles to achieve different outcomes.

Because once you understand the variables, you gain the freedom to make carving your own.

This workshop has a minimum participation of 4 persons to operate, if minimum participation is not met within 14 days of the start date you will receive a full refund.

Monday | Duck Stance Carving

Finding Freedom Through Versatility & Expression

Duck stance carving opens the door to a playful and expressive approach to snowboard performance. With our feet positioned in opposing directions, we can explore a wide range of movements and body positions while maintaining the versatility of a more symmetrical stance.

On Day 1, we’ll investigate how stance configuration influences balance, movement options, and our ability to create and maintain high edge angles.

Drawing inspiration from riders like Ryan Knapton, we’ll examine how familiar carving fundamentals can be expressed through different movement patterns, turn shapes, and creative riding choices. Through guided experimentation, personalized coaching, and video analysis, we’ll explore:

  • How duck stance configuration influences our movement options and carving performance.
  • Using inclination and angulation to develop higher edge angles while maintaining balance.
  • Exploring different body positions and movement strategies across toeside and heelside turns in both directions.
  • How board design, stance width, and binding angles influence carving possibilities.
  • Developing greater versatility and personal expression.

The goal isn’t to imitate someone else’s riding, but to discover new possibilities within a familiar stance and expand your own carving vocabulary.

Tuesday | Soft-Boot Posi-Posi Carving

Exploring a Different Approach to Balance, Movement & Style

What happens when we change the way we stand on our snowboard?

On Day 2, we’ll explore soft-boot posi-posi carving, a style commonly associated with Japanese carving culture that uses positive binding angles on both feet to create different movement opportunities.

With a new stance comes a different relationship between our body and board, inviting us to reconsider familiar approaches to inclination, angulation, edge engagement, and turn shape.

Drawing inspiration from riders like Kazunori Hirama (Rama), we’ll explore how changes in equipment setup and body positioning can influence our carving performance. Through guided experimentation, personalized coaching, and video analysis, we’ll investigate:

  • How positive binding angles influence body alignment, balance, and movement options.
  • Exploring alternative approaches to inclination and angulation.
  • How stance configuration and board design influence edge engagement and turn shape.
  • Adapting familiar carving movements to a different equipment setup.
  • Discovering which elements of posi-posi carving can complement our individual riding styles.

We’ll conclude by reflecting on the experiences of both days, comparing how different movement choices influence our performance and identifying opportunities to bring those discoveries into our everyday riding.

Two distinct approaches. The same fundamental principles. A whole new perspective on what’s possible.
