Ever wanted to lay down lines with Japanese style? or pop a 360 off the nose of your snowboard? Join us for our first ever dedicated Carving and ground trick camp. Over the course of 7 days (5 days on snow) you’ll learn the physics behind carving, explore stance angles, board design, and learn how to break down and rebuild almost any trick. If that wasn’t enough, this is the time of year Timberline builds their transition park, giving us opportunities to take new concepts and apply them to a variety of interesting shapes!

Coaches for this session are:

Sky Hue – Mandarin Speaking, AASI L3, and understudy of Colorado Legend Ryan Knapton. Sky has put thousands of hours into perfecting his technique and he’s skilled at sharing what he knows. Sky’s approach to teaching is as methodical as his approach to learning, layering small adjustments to equal big performance, zooming in on the details to ensure balance through all phases of the turn.

Joshua Thompson-Bourrie – Progression Sessions Founder, AASI L3, and understudy of the world of carving. JTB’s love for carving got a huge boost in 2019 when he got the chance to host a Camp in Japan with carving legend Rama. From there he spent countless evenings under the lights a Goryu in Hakuba and on the Banks at Happo studying style, understanding how stance, board design, and athleticism combine to create a truly elegant turn.

We scheduled this event in May to take advantage of the Northwest’s best “Second Winter” destination. When most ski areas are pairing down or switching off, Timberline is actually expanding their operations hosting; 4+ terrain parks (including a halfpipe); 3,690 vertical ft. of lift driven sliding from the top of Palmer to the Bottom of Jeff Flood Express, wide open groomers, and plentiful backcountry opportunities above and beyond the lifts.

Day 1, Saturday, Arrival Day

Arrive at PDX by 4pm, or Government Camp by 5:30pm. We’ll get moved in and have a leisurely dinner at our lodge where we’ll discuss the week ahead get to know one another and make any equipment modifications for the next days adventure.

Day 2, Sunday, Fundamentals of Carving (The Inclination Angulation Equation)

For our first day on snow we’ll do a deep dive into the physics behind carving, we’ll explore the balance between inclination, angulation, board design, speed, surface, space, etc. to gain a deeper understanding of how carving actually works and why it is so FUN! On this day we’ll also capture some video of your personal performance for later review back at the lodge.

Day 3, Monday, Posi-Posi Stance (A gateway to Japanese Style Carving)

Mondays are usually empty on the mountain, that means wide open opportunities to take your carved turns to the next level, in this clinic we’ll explore new ways of accessing clean carves by adjusting our stance angles to + 36 and + 18. With a new stance we’ll have new limits for angulation and our ability to effect board design, making it easier than ever to touch the ground both toeside and heeside, while laying down a line that inspires.

Day 4, Tuesday, Field Trip

This is the day mental and physical fatigue usually sets in.. so we are mixing things up to keep you engaged and growing. Depending on group ambitions and snow conditions we will do one of these options:
A: Take a drive to explore Mt. Bachelor. – this option will start with a 6am departure, but the pay off is huge.. ripping groomers, a Woodward Park, accessible steeps, and a view that can’t be beat.

B: City Day. – This City of Roses is fun, beautiful, and weird. Taking a break from snowboarding we’ll redirect or fun with a restorative city day, we’ll check out the river side, the foodie side, and even the wild side.

C: Half day ride and Hood River Social – We’ll leave the mountain early and take a drive to Sunny Hood River for a afternoon on the water front, from wineries, breweries, skate parks, etc. we have plenty of options to have a fun social afternoon.

Day 5, Wednesday, Ground Tricks.

You’ll be glad you’ve had a day to rest because this day is all about finding the limits of our board and our body. We’ll take a unique approach to discovery, calling upon some of your favorite video clips for inspiration, we’ll break down the mechanics of what we see, and step by step we’ll re-construct new tricks into our own riding. So you’ll leave with a bounty of fun new maneuvers as well as a process to learn even more new tricks on your own time.

Day 6, Thursday, Put it all together

Carving and Ground tricks… Carve, trick, carve, trick.. and the creative application to changing terrain. We’ll also make sure to capture plenty of video so you can share your new found skills with the world.

After snowboarding we’ll have a party at our lodge worthy of our efforts.

Day 7, Friday, Departure Day

All good things must come to an end (at least a temporary one). Departing flights must be scheduled after 9am. Coaches will make sure you are at the Airport at least 90min minutes before your flight departs.
